Received wisdom would have us believe that The 60s began in Liverpool in 1963, commensurate with the arrival of The Beatles and the ensuant British Beat/R&B Boom.  Well, that’s certainly the romantic view, but the seeds of the British Beat Boom had been sewn a few years earlier - in an altogether different grimy, down-at-heel European port, viz: Hamburg.  And whilst The Beatles would, of course, subsequently go on to grab all the credit and glory, a great many other groups and singers had been paying their not inconsiderable dues in the years immediately preceding 1963.  This compilation presents 65 tracks which anticipated and/or helped shape the Beat Boom, and includes a number of the names who would go on to achieve enormous mid-60s successes.

The first British group to play the Hamburg clubs were The Jets, who ironically never recorded.  But their lead singer/guitarist Tony Sheridan would go on to become a legendary figure in Germany and one of the most influential musicians on the Beat scene.  He famously recorded with The Beatles, of course - their single, ‘My Bonnie’/‘The Saints’, made the German charts in late 1961 and would ultimately be the catalyst which led Brian Epstein to them - and he also recorded with The Beat Brothers.  The first Liverpudlians to play in Hamburg were Howie Casey & The Seniors (they were also the first Scouse Beat Group to cut a record) whilst other important British groups to play out there in the early 60s included Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates (whose ‘A Shot Of Rhythm & Blues’/‘I Can Tell’ was an early Beat Boom classic), Screaming Lord Sutch & The Savages, Joe Brown & The Bruvvers, Emile Ford & The Checkmates, Buddy Britten & The Regents, Mike Berry & The Outlaws, Chris Farlowe & Thunderbirds, and many more.

Meanwhile, back home in the UK, groups like The Dave Clark Five, Brian Poole & The Tremeloes, Carter-Lewis & The Southerners, The Overlanders, The Roulettes (who would later back Adam Faith), Robb Storme & The Whispers and The Dowlands & The Soundtracks were starting out on their recording careers - they would all go on to taste later successes.  A surprising number of the ‘old guard’ were cutting records which indicated they were still in touch with the changing musical times, notably Cliff & The Shadows, Billy Fury & The Tornados, Adam Faith, Shane Fenton & Fentones, Jet Harris, Eden Kane and Jimmy Justice, whilst groups like Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated (whose personnel included singers Cyril Davies and Long John Baldry), Jimmy Powell & The Dimensions and Jackie Lynton & The Jury were destined simply to enjoy cult status, despite being hugely influential (notably Blues Incorporated, who almost single-handedly kickstarted the UK Blues Boom).
