MAX MILLER - In London

Miller Magic!
Even in his lifetime, Max Miller was referred to as “The Pure Gold of the Music Hall”. This very apt epithet was coined by the critic Lionel Hale. For twenty-five years he remained a leading attraction, ill-health being the cause of his going into semi-retirement in the late 1950s. Described as “the greatest front cloth comedian of his time”, Max himself was right when he used to say “There’ll never be another, lady; when I’m dead and gone the game’s finished.” He invariably offered his audiences jokes from the ‘white book’ (respectable) or the ‘blue book’ (‘adult’ humour) - and they always, of course, called for the ‘blue book’.
